Around six people were injured in a clash between two communities during a Muharram procession in Kanpur on Sunday.

According to Dhirendra Kumar Singh, SHO Juhi police station, around 4 pm, a Muharram Tazia procession reached Jhandawala junction where it had to take a turn.

“But some people from the procession wanted to go further. However, police turned them around. Later, some miscreants in the group started making an issue of the matter. Soon, stones were being pelted between those in the procession and another group from outside,” Singh said.

At least three civilians and police personnel were injured in this incident. Avinash Chandra, ADG (Kanpur), said around six motorcycles were also damaged in the incident and a few were even gutted. Two RAF and three PAC teams are now in the district and the situation is under control, the police said.

In another incident, a minor clash was reported from Kalyanpur on Sunday morning when some people allegedly tore down some banners.

The police, however, said the banners were of telecom companies and that the clash seems to have been a fallout of a minor incident from the previous day. ADG Chandra could not confirm if anybody was injured in the incident.
