Raja’s screams were heard by his neighbour Rajendra, who rushed to help. Rajendra and a few others cleared the bricks under which Raja was buried by 3.30 am. Rajendra said: “It was raining heavily and there was no power. I could only hear his screams as I had come outside to get network on my phone. After we cleared the bricks and I lifted Raja’s body, it felt a little warm, so I though he might be alive.”

The neighbours called for an ambulance, but as it took a long time to respond, Raja was taken to a private hospital in a car, where he was declared brought dead.Raja’s mother Chinnamma said, “He was completely covered by bricks, and I could not move as the bricks fell on my feet. I screamed for Rajendra to save my son, but he wasn’t able to.”

Ambulance came late: neighbours
Raja is survived by his mother, wife Chinna (26) and younger brother Manjunath. Tigala, another neighbour, said Raja was the family’s primary breadwinner and the only one who regularly worked. She added that they had called for the ambulance as early as 3 am, the authorities asked for directions to reach the spot only at 4.30 am, when they were told not to come.
