Former Congress leader Narayan Rane floated a new political party called the Maharashtra Swabhimaan Paksh, that "will support the BJP government in Maharashtra".

This decision from Rane comes after the BJP's inadequate response to induct him into the party fold. Last week, Rane had also met BJP president Amit Shah in Delhi.

Rane had earlier claimed 25 corporators (from the Shiv Sena and Congress) would join him in joining the BJP fold.

Rane had resigned from the Congress last month while accusing the party of reneging on the promise of making him the chief minister when he had joined the party 12 years ago after leaving the Shiv Sena.

He had also resigned as a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council.

Rane recently attacked the state government in the Assembly questioning the deteriorating law and order, leading to Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis threatening to read out the long list of police cases filed against Rane.

A prominent leader from the influential Maratha community, Rane was the chief minister in 1999 while in the Shiv Sena.
