Amidst the controversy around the mishandling of the protests by the female students over molestation of a girl in the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) campus, the search has begun for a new Vice-Chancellor (VC). As per an Indian Express report, the Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry has asked the search-cum-selection committee to screen all the applications that come for the post and shortlist three amongst them and send their names back to the government.
Noteworthy, the move isn’t a consequence of the BHU molestation case, but the search for the replacement is because of the fact that the incumbent VC will head towards his retirement in less than two months. Reportedly, the government wants to find a suitable replacement for the post before the incumbent VC, G C Tripathi, completes his term. As per the BHU Act, Tripathi will continue to serve as VC until a new one is appointed.

An advertisement has also been uploaded on the university’s website for the same. As per the advertisement, the requirement for the new VC is to be “a visionary with proven leadership qualities, administrative capabilities and research credentials”. The other requirements include an ”outstanding academic record” and a minimum of 10 years of experience as a university professor. Also, he/she shouldn’t be above 67 years of age.

Recently, Tripathi has been hogging the media limelight due to his misogynist statements over the whole incident. He has also been accused of several cases of being biased against women.
