NSS general secretary G. Sukumaran Nair has called for redrafting the current reservation policy which, according to him, is unscientific and a bane of the economically backward among the forward communities.
Inaugurating the 104th Vijayadashami Nair Mahasammelan organised by the Changanassery taluk union at Perunna on Saturday, Mr. Nair said the need of the hour was to launch a legal fight against the policy.
“The NSS is ready to lead the fight,” he said.
The NSS chief pointed out that successive governments had extended the present quota system to public sector institutions and raised the ceiling for creamy layer.
Sinhu panel report
According to him, the report of the Maj. Gen. S R Sinhu Commission, constituted to study the issue of quota for the indigent among the forward communities, has been lying with the Central government. “The successive governments have not cared to look into it and implement its recommendations,” Mr. Nair said. “It is against such social injustice that the NSS is launching a legal battle,” he said.
Equidistance policy
He called upon the members of the community to be vigilant as the discrimination against the forward communities was on the rise, especially with regard to reservation issues. Mr. Nair, however, said the State governments were taking a positive attitude to the demands made by the NSS and this was a clear pointer to the victory of the policy of equidistance followed by the organisation.
