It will be titled ‘Indian 2’ and helmed by director Shankar

A sequel to the 1996 movie Indian, starring Kamal Haasan, titled Indian 2 was announced by producer Dil Raju on Saturday.

The project, which will be helmed by director Shankar, will see Kamal Haasan play the lead role again.

Indian, which released over 20 years ago, had Mr. Haasan essay dual roles — one of which saw him play a former freedom fighter who takes on corruption prevalent in society.

The announcement of the sequel comes close on the heels of Mr. Haasan’s recent statements about his entry into politics.

Debate

His fans also took to the social media to debate whether he will be reprising his role as Senapathy, the ex-freedom fighter who becomes a vigilante to tackle corruption.

Mr. Raju announced on his Facebook page that he was delighted to be associated with two stalwarts of Indian cinema, Mr. Haasan and Mr. Shankar, for the project. “We will be producing the project in all languages,” he announced.

Under his banner Sri Venkateswara Creations, he has produced several Telugu movies.

For the original movie, Mr. Haasan had won the national award for best actor.

While the actor’s Vishwaroopam 2 is reportedly being readied for release, his other project Sabhash Naidu, which he was acting and directing, is still in the works.

Director Shankar is at present working on the post production of his ambitious project 2.0, starring Rajinikanth, which is slated for release sometime in 2018.
