President appoints new governors

NEW DELHI: President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday appointed governors for Assam, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya.

He also appointed a new Lt. governor for Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Banwarilal Purohit was appointed governor of Tamil Nadu. Maharashtra Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao was holding the additional charge of governor of Tamil Nadu and there had been demands of appointment of a full-time governor in view of the political situation in the southern state.

Satya Pal Malik, former MP and BJP's national vice president, has been appointed the governor of Bihar. The post had fallen vacant after Kovind was nominated as the BJP's presidential candidate.

Jagdish Mukhi has been appointed the new governor of Assam.


Brigadier BD Mishra (Retd) was appointed governor of Arunachal Pradesh and Ganga Prasad governor of Meghalaya.


Admiral (Retd) Devendra Kumar Joshi was appointed governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.


"The above appointments will take effects from the dates the incumbents assume charge of their respective offices," the President's office said in a comminique.
