Hospital administration at ILBS said that as a result of the “provocation” by Jeena Joseph on Saturday, more than 50 people from the hospital’s nursing and technical staff did not report for duty. The administration added that it is making “sincere efforts” to maintain patient care services.

The administration said that Joseph indulged in “gross indiscipline and dereliction of duties” and “instigated other staff members” to proceed on strike and disrupt activities. “Her services were dispensed with as per HR policy of the institute and she was discharged from services on September 28. Now, at her provocation, more than 50 per cent of the hospital nursing and technical staff have not reported today,” a senior official said.

The administration said that on September 29, after finishing OPD at 7 pm, the director met the staff. “The nurse was apprised that the order has followed due procedure as per HR policy. It was apprised to her that three-month salary has been credited to her account,” the official said.

“Jeena and other nursing staff acknowledged that she has done serious misconduct but kept requesting to reinstate her. The administration told her to put her reply in writing… At 8.30 pm, she went to the washroom and did not come out for 10 minutes… the guard found blood beneath the door and opened it… she had made a superficial cut on her left wrist,” the official said, adding that her services were terminated since her performance was found to be “not satisfactory”.
