We are not sure if Varun Dhawan can supersede Bollywood superstar Salman Khan with his performance in ‘Judwaa 2’, but he has already managed to earn more than Shah Rukh Khan’s film ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ on the opening day. With an opening of Rs 16.10 crore, Varun Dhawan’s film was already in the list of highest openers of 2017, and its second day was even bigger when it accumulated a remarkable amount of Rs 20.55 crore. The total earnings of the film as of Sunday stands at Rs 36.65 crore.

Even though ‘Judwaa 2’ has been critically panned, the Puja and Dussehra holidays and the emotions of watching a remake of a ’90s Hindi film have worked well for the movie. This is the first time Varun Dhawan was seen in a double role. His contemporaries Sidharth Malhotra and Arjun Kapoor had also tried their hands at a double role with ‘A Gentleman’ and ‘Mubarakan’, respectively, but they failed to impress critics and the audience. Meanwhile, Varun Dhawan’s film has managed to garner enough audience.

“Varun wades fully into both characters, and shows a nimble-footedness here and there. He is better at the broad, physical, crotch-lowering ‘gali ka gunda’, than the straight, subdued fella, and judging by the roars and claps of the mostly youthful crowd at the first-day, first-show, he knows it too. Fernandez and Pannu show up and do what they need to when called for: squeal and act surprised and swing to the beat; the latter making the most of her part. Pannu is the real surprise here, and a welcome one. But the material gets too thin and stretched around Judwaa 2’s flab. A character keeps saying: ‘main seedha point pe aata hoon’. You wish the film did too,” wrote film critic Shubhra Gupta in her review of Judwaa 2.
