Mumbai: Blood spilled on the foot overbridge and bodies tumbled down the railings but there was no help in sight. This was the horrific scene at the scene of the stampede. The help came bumt from the locals.

Bhibishan Jadhav, (39), who works in an eatery at Parel rushed the minute he heard of the chaos. “I took help from a few others to rescue the injured who were lying unconscious on the staircase. It was a chilling sight. There were at least 15 persons on the staircase when we rushed to rescue them,” Jadhav said. “It was raining heavily when we heard women screaming for help. We were alarmed by their cries. As we rushed out, we found the entire area outside our quarters waterlogged. It was scary when at the site we saw people with mangled limbs,” said Vinal Rao, a resident of the nearby railway quarters.

Nilesh Sonawame, who works as a driver in Parel area, said, “I had to break open the sheets which cover the bridge as many commuters were trapped in between these sheets.” A local Sena unit despatched ambulances to the spot. Later, public hospital ambulances, railway staff, the police and the NDRF personnel also arrived.
