Miami Jury Awards over $20 Million to Florida Family
MIAMI, Sept. 20, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- A Broward County jury awarded $20,646,000 to Plaintiff Charles Garrison and his wife, Cynthia last Friday evening in a Broward County courtroom. Sixty-one year old Garrison was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2008. Mesothelioma is a rare cancer caused by asbestos. Mr. Garrison and his wife have been married for more than 33 years and have two daughters.
Juan Bauta, of The Ferraro Law Firm in Miami tried the case against defendant Union Carbide Corp., and argued that Mr. Garrison's exposure to Georgia Pacific's joint compound which contained Union Carbide asbestos between 1974 and 1975 caused his terminal cancer. Mr. Garrison never saw any warning labels on the buckets of Georgia Pacific joint compound and never knew it contained asbestos.
"It is remarkable to me that Union Carbide did not attempt to try to settle this case rather than put the Garrison's through more than two weeks of intense trial," said Juan Bauta. Bauta, lead counsel, was assisted by attorney Case Dam, also of The Ferraro Law Firm.
