NORRISTOWN >> On Saturday, Sept. 30, the NAACP Youth Chapter of Norristown will host a Day Party to kick-off the 2017/2018 program year at the Greater Norristown, PAL located at 340 Harding Blvd., from noon until 2 p.m. The NAACP Youth Chapter has partnered with Lincoln University, Montgomery County Community College, Brotha (DJ) Onaci Entertainment, Mothers With Sons Organization, Greater Norristown PAL and a host of other civic organizations. The Day Party will feature a basketball shoot-out contest, dancing, food, step show presentation by local Greek organizations and several competitions and giveaways.
Norristown’s youth chapter of the NAACP had been inactive, but as of November 2016, it has been revived under the leadership of Chapter Advisor Jennifer Thompkins, a former student of Norristown Area High School who wants to make a difference in the community.
“It is important that our young people are engaged in productive activities that will foster an understanding of civic duty, a love of community, and the motivation to achieve their career goals,” said Thompkins.
Already, the youth group has sponsored a Martin Luther King Day event and a panel discussion on education and activism.
“During these times, we don’t just need young people to post about injustice, but we also need them to be committed to the work that injustice demands,” Thompkins said. “The Norristown NAACP Youth Chapter can provide the education and leadership to help young people build a better world than the world that was willed to them.”
