Bhayandar: Stung by the discouraging record in their endeavour to reach their target of 100 per cent garbage segregation at source, Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation Mayor Dimple Mehta has turned to members of the Mahila Bachat Gat ( self help groups) and homemakers to drive home the message of dry and wet waste management at household levels.

This initiative has been included under the itinerary chalked out by the civic body to mark the third anniversary of Swachh Bharat Mission on 2nd October.

“Cutting across party lines, all corporators, especially women, will be requested to join hands with the administration to propagate the theme of garbage segregation and to make known the ill-effects of plastic to the womenfolk,” said Mehta who also hinted at her plans of mooting a resolution to impose a ban on the use of  non-biodegradable materials like use-and-throw cups which are not only polluting the environment, but  also harmful to animals and poses a serious public health hazard.

“Segregation is the key to waste management and public participation is a must. Our entire machinery is trying hard to achieve cent percent target on the segregation front, just as we did to flush out open defecation from the region,” said civic chief Dr. Naresh Gite. To bolster its campaign of waste segregation, the MBMC is all set to recognise and reward housing societies with high degree of civic sense, this apart from creating awareness through various programmes encouraging students to spread the message to their family, friends and relatives.
