After facing a 3-0 defeat in the hands of French club Paris Saint Germain in the Champions League group stage on Wednesday night, Bayern decided to sack manager Carlo Ancelotti, who was summoned for crisis talks back in Germany on Thursday.

The Italian manager had a contract with the German giants till June 2019 and is now linked with a return to his former club AC Milan. Ancelotti was already under pressure to quit after the Bundesliga reigning champions had a slow start to the season, drawing 2-2 at home to Wolfsburg last weekend. The Bavarian giants now stand at the third position in the domestic league.

After taking over as Pep Guardiola’s successor in July 2016, Ancelotti had been incharge of Bayern for nearly 15 months, leading them to their fifth consecutive Bundesliga title in his first season in charge. Bayern were, however, knocked out in the quarter-finals of Champions League by his former club Real Madrid last season.

Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge had said after Dani Alves, Edinson Cavani and Neymar led PSG to a victory, “It’s a loss we have to talk about, we have to analyse, from which we have to draw consequences in clear text form. I think what we saw this evening was not Bayern Munich. I think we all agree on that.”
