Mumbai: Top civic officials led by Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta will visit housing societies generating bulk waste on October 2, when it becomes mandatory for such societies to compost wet waste and hand over only dry waste for disposal.
The visit is being touted as a “token of appreciation” from civic authorities to citizens on Gandhi Jayanti. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued 4,748 notices to such bulk waste generators, whose daily waste collection totals to 2,200 metric tons, to ensure that composting units are up and running by October 2. Mr. Mehta will visit a few societies, while assistant commissioners and other senior officers will visit the rest.
Success story
Mr. Mehta and senior officers will also visit the Nehru Nagar slum colony in K-West ward, which has successfully achieved the ‘zero waste’ target with the help of the Slum Adoption Programme (SAP). The officers will congratulate the residents and volunteers.
The colony, with a population of around 30,000, produces 10 tons of waste every day. SAP volunteers have successfully set up wet composting units and dry waste segregation units for disposal.
