Loan waiver scheme to miss deadline

Mumbai: With banks yet to submit a list of applicants seeking farm loan waivers, and the public reading of beneficiaries at the village level to continue till October 2, the State government will miss the October 1 deadline for transferring money to farmers’ accounts.

Confirming this, State Co-operation Minister Subhash Deshmukh said, “The scrutiny of applications is in progress We hope to begin transferring loan waivers to farmers’ accounts soon.”

In a cabinet sub-committee meeting on Tuesday, it was announced that the loan waiver scheme will not begin on schedule.

Sources said the money transfers will begin mid-October, sometime around Diwali. In addition, over 2.41 lakh farmers have not linked Aadhar to their applications. Ajit Nawale of the Maharashtra Kisan Sabha said the government’s intention has never been to extend benefits to farmers.

“Seeking online applications and connecting them with Aadhar is nothing but stretching time. The government is playing with the emotions of farmers,” he said.
