BHU protest: Vice-chancellor of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) Girish Chandra Tripathi has been facing flaks from several quarters for the reported violence on the campus. Now the HRD Ministry has started the process for the appointment of the next vice-chancellor paving way for Tripathi to go on ‘leave’, according to Indian Express report. It has been learnt that the ministry has already moved a file to constitute the search and election committee which will find his successor. However, Tripathi will continue to hold the post untill the new VC is appointed.
The ministry is keen to avoid such a situation and is aiming to identify a successor before Tripathi’s retirement, according to report. “A file with six names will be sent to Rashtrapati Bhavan in the next few days, from which the President will appoint three nominees to the search and selection committee. The V-C’s post will also be advertised soon,” according to Indian Express report
Protest erupted in the prestigeous university after an incident of alleged sexual harassment on campus and several cases of alleged institutional bias against women came to the fore. The violence had erupted on the campus around last weekend after some students, protesting against the incident on Thursday, wanted to meet the varsity’s vice-chancellor at his residence. The protesting students were demanding round-the-clock security, making security personnel accountable for untoward incidents targeting girls, CCTV network and proper checking at the gates, recruitment of women security guards and setting up of a gender sensitisation panel.
Chief Proctor of the University Professor O N Singh has resigned from his post, taking “moral responsibility” for the violence on the campus. Singh had submitted his resignation to the vice chancellor on Tuesday night. The resignation was immediately accepted by the Vice Chancellor Girish Chandra Tripathi, officials said. Professor M K Singh of the BHU Medical College has been given the charge of the chief proctor, a press release from the BHU said.
