In just 6 days of its release, Rajkummar Rao’s Newton has managed to pass the Rs 10 crore mark with its collection of Rs 10.73 crore at the box office. Ever since the news of Newton being India’s official entry to Oscars was announced, its numbers have been shooting up. What makes this phenomenon even more remarkable is that Newton opened to only 430 screens on Friday. But swiftly, it made its way to the top giving other releases like Bhoomi and Haseena Parkar a run for their money.

Tweeting the latest figures, trade analyst Taran Adarsh wrote, “#Newton is ROCK-STEADY… Fri 96 lakhs, Sat 2.52 cr, Sun 3.42 cr, Mon 1.31 cr, Tue 1.34 cr, Wed 1.18 cr. Total: ₹ 10.73 cr. India biz.” Helmed by Amit Masurkar, Newton received a lot of flak for being a rip-off of Iranian film Secret Ballot. But soon enough, Bollywood celebrities and the cast and crew came in full support of the film and clarified the rumours.

In her review of Rajkummar Rao’s film, Indian Express film critic Shubhra Gupta had said, “Rajkummar Rao is enjoying a purple patch. After Bareilly Ki Barfi, here he is again stitching up a big performance full of small things: blinking, thinking, doing. He is at his most interesting when he is being quiet: he makes us watch. Pankaj Tripathi, as the head of the security detail, cynical yet doing the best he can, is lovely too. For once the talented Patil has been used well, and as for Raghubir Yadav, he gives us, after Peepli Live, another stand-out act, a lesson in How To Immerse Yourself Effortlessly In Your Role.”

Released on September 22, Newton also stars Pankaj Tripathi and Raghubir Yadav and had started with only Rs 96 lakh on the first day.
