Hindi film ‘Newton,’ directed by Amit Masurkar and Assamese film ‘Village Rockstars’ directed by Rima Das, will be the Indian films in the competition category of the 22nd International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) to be held from December 8 to 15.

‘Newton’ is about a government clerk who is sent to a Naxal-controlled town in Chattisgarh on election duty, and his attempts to conduct free and fair voting, braving the fear of guerilla attacks and the apathy of the security forces. Earlier this week, the film was chosen as the Indian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards.

‘Village Rockstar’ tells the story of a girl who is rebellious and dreams of owning a guitar. In addition to the two films in the competition category, seven other films have been announced in the ‘Indian Cinema Now’ category — ‘Kadvi Hawa’ directed by Nila Madhab Panda, ‘III Smoking Barrels’ directed by Sanjib Dey, ‘Shade’ directed by Nikhil Allug, ‘Teen Aur Aadha’ directed by Dariya Gaikalova, ‘Nude’ directed by Ravi Jadhav, ‘In the shadows’ directed by Deepesh Jain, and ‘Kachha Limbu’ directed by Prasad Oak.
