After coming under sharp criticism for not creating enough jobs amid slowing economy, the government plans to fill up 2 million posts lying vacant with various state and central ministries and public sector companies, reports The Economic Times.

The government will first fill up jobs in central ministries and nearly 240 public sector entities. This includes filling up nearly 200,000 lakh positions with the Indian Railways to make train travel safer.

A senior government official told ET, the labour ministry is working on a plan to fill up posts in various central government departments and organisations.

The plan is likely to be rolled out in next few months, the report said.

All ministries and central public sector enterprises (CPSEs) will have to provide the list of vacancies available with them to the Labour Ministry so that it can draw up an appropriate plan to fill them up.

The informal sector that absorbs a large chunk of the population has been severely hit by the demonetisation. Slowdown in hiring by the private sector has aggravated the matter further for millions of young job seekers entering the market every year.
