CHENNAI: ‘External factors’ could have led to the death of medical aspirant Anitha of Ariyalur recently, the Vice-Chairman of National Commission of Scheduled Castes (NCSC), L Murugan, said on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters after the NCSC review meeting, he said he believed that there were ‘external forces’ other than NEET that pushed her to commit suicide.

“We have sought a detailed report from the Superintendent of Police within 15 days,” he said. The NCSC conducts review meetings on a regular basis to clear pending cases before the commission and intervene wherever necessary.

Speaking to Express, Murugan said NEET was a ‘requirement’ for the State to compete at the national level.

With a section of the media claiming he had said Anitha’s death could be murder, Murugan said, “I personally have no doubt it was suicide. I only said there could have been factors apart from NEET that provoked her to commit suicide. There is no truth in the reports saying that I suspect it was murder.”
