Spl team to manage emergency situations; mock drill conducted

The mock drill performed at Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, Kochi, on Tuesday to assess the safety arrangements at the venue.
KOCHI: A specialised team under the District Disaster Management Authority will implement a systematic crisis management plan at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium here for the upcoming FIFA U-17 World Cup matches.As part of this, a mock drill was conducted at the stadium, the main venue of the matches, on Tuesday to assess the efficacy of the system in tackling emergencies.
"The trial proved that the system to evacuate the stadium and administer medical aid to the people during emergency situations is flawless," said an officer.
"During the mock drill, we were able to evacuate the stadium and shift the people safely to a common assembly point within five minutes. Those who require medical attention can be taken to the ambulance within the stipulated time. The system for evacuating people through ropes from the elevated stands was also tested. The prepardness of the medical team and ambulances were also assessed. The medical team will prioritise treatment/patients based on the colour of the ribbons that will be tied on them," the officer said.
A total of 320 stewards, who were given special training in administering first aid and managing fire mishaps, will be deployed at the venue. They will be monitored by 25 police officers.
A total of 400 volunteers from the National Disaster Response Force, medical team, Police Department and Fire and Rescue Services took part in the mock drill. The final mock drill will be conducted on October 3 and 4," said an officer with the District Disaster Management Authority. District Collector K Mohammed Y Safeerulla, City Police Commissioner M P Dinesh and DCP Karthikeyan monitored Tuesday's drill. The members of FIFA U-17 local organising committee and GCDA authorities were also present.
