Kabul airport attack: In a shocking turn of events around 20-30 rockets have landed in Kabul Airport and its surrounding areas in Afghanistan, according to ANI report. It has been learnt that flights have been cancelled and the airport is being evacuated. The target of these rockets could be the NATO base which is located adjacent to Airport. The incident took place after US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis had arrived in the Afghan capital for talks, an official said. “A rocket landed near the airport this morning. No casualties reported,” interior ministry spokesman Najib Danish said in a tweet. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, according to AFP report. Mattis will meet Afghanistan president Ashraf Ghani.
Meanwhile, attacks in two neighboring provinces in Afghanistan killed at least five policemen, Afghan officials said today, while a sixth policeman died in a gunbattle with the Taliban in another province, reports said. In western Herat province, two police officers died in a roadside bombing while in neighboring Farah province, three were killed when a bombing targeted their checkpoint. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks but officials in both provinces blamed the Taliban.
Insurgents have been active in both Herat and Farah as the Taliban stepped up their attacks against Afghan security forces across the country this year. Jelani Farhad, spokesman for the provincial governor in Herat, said that along with the two who died in the attack there, three other officers were wounded. The police were on a routine patrol in Ghoryan district when the bomb exploded on Tuesday, he added.
In Farah province, where the three officers were killed, Mohammad Naser Mehri, spokesman for the provincial governor, said insurgents attacked the checkpoint and triggered a gunbattle that lasted for two hours.
