Elephant dies after being hit by train in Jharkhand

An elephant died after it was hit by a goods train and dragged for half a kilometre in Jharkhand's East Singhbhum district on Wednesday, police said.

The elephant was crossing the railway track near Khemasuli railway station situated between Khargpur-Tata railway route when it was hit by the train.

The accident affected train services for nearly two hours.

The elephant's body was removed from the track by the forest officials.

In more than 40 elephants have died after being hit by speeding passenger and goods trains.

Railway authorities have put a speed limit at several place in where movement of elephants takes place.

Railway sources say that despite the speed restriction, goods and passenger trains move at high speed.
