Heavy rains delay completion of  Sewage Treatment Plant's

BENGALURU: Recent heavy rains have brought civil works in connection with four sewage treatment plants (STPs) to a standstill. The September-end deadline for completion of the works has now been pushed to the end of October.

These treatment plants are being constructed under the Cauvery Water Supply Scheme Stage IV, Phase-II. The plants are coming up at Bellandur Amanikane, Yelamallappa Chetty, Doddabele and Kadugodi.
“The four plants would be able to treat a total of 131 Million Litres of Per Day (MLD) of sewage when commissioned. Over 90 per cent of the works have been completed. But the contractor has been forced to stop work temporarily due to the rains,” said P N Ravindra, Chief Engineer, Kavery, BWSSB.
Most of the work is going on in low-lying areas, said another official.  

When commissioned, the Bellandur Amanikene Plant will treat 90 MLD sewage from South East Bengaluru like HSR Layout and Koramangala after they are pumped here from Agara Pump House while the Yelamallappa Chetty plant will take care of 15MLD of sewage from K R Puram, Mahadevapura, Devasandra and Bhattarahalli. Kadugodi plant will treat 6MLD sewage from entire Hoodi area while Doddabale plant will take care of 20 MLD of sewage discharge from Nagarbhavi and Kengeri.

A total of ten STPS are being installed under the Phase-II Scheme in order to treat 336 MLD of sewage.“The project is being funded by Japanese funding agency, Japan International Co-operation Agency, at a cost of Rs 1,200 crore. Intermediate sewage pumping stations and laying of pipelines for 35 km form part of the project,” he said.

Of the ten planned, four STPs which can treat 125 MLD have already been commissioned at Raja Canal, Nagasandra, Chikkabanavar and KNC Valley, Ravindra said. Work was still progressing at two more plants at Horamavu and Kengeri and will take a few more months for completion.
