US Consul General in Chennai Robert Burgess called on Tamil Nadu Governor CH Vidyasagar Rao and pitched for expanding and deepening close ties between America and South India, especially the state.
Burgess, who called on Rao at the Raj Bhavan here, said India and United States have marked 70 years of diplomatic relations.
"India-US Investment initiative aims on promotion of more investment, security, education, capital market development and financing of infrastructure", Burgess was quoted as saying in an official release.
Noting that 50,000 US citizens were living in the state, he said, "the long history and close ties between US and South India especially Tamil Nadu has to be further expanded and deepened."
The US Consulate in Chennai was one of the top visa adjudication posts and the number one in world in processing "employment based H1B visa," he said.
During his brief interaction with Burgess, Rao highlighted the need for developing a comprehensive plan for drinking water requirements of Chennai.
The Governor stated that sharing of technology and joint ventures would further expand the bilateral relations between the two countries.
Burgess said he would look forward to the conduct of education exchange programmes and also appreciated the green initiative taken at the Raj Bhavan.
US Consulate, Political Officer, Ken McBride, Political Specialist, M Subramani Mancombu, Principal Secretary to Governor, Ramesh Chand Meena, Deputy Secretary to Governor K V Muralidharan were also present on the occasion.
