The over bridge at Shankar Vilas centre in Guntur | Express

GUNTUR: The Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) has proposed to construct a Railway Under  Bridge (RUB) and Railway Over Bridge (ROB) at Shankar Vilas centre to ease traffic congestion in the city. The over bridge connecting East and West Guntur was constructed several decades ago. The then chief minister Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy laid the foundation stone for the bridge on August 8, 1958. The GMC is planning to construct the new flyover after dismantling the old over bridge which has become congested in the wake of steep rise in vehicular traffic in the city.

The GMC, Railways and R&B departments will take up the project of RUB and ROB in two phases. The RUB is estimated to cost `25 crore. It has been proposed to construct RUB on both sides of Brodipet and Arundelpet. After completion of RUB project, the old bridge will be demolished to construct a new flyover at an estimated cost of `150 crore.

R&B Minister Ch Ayyanna Patrudu inspected the over bridge on Monday and studied the traffic problem at the busy Shankar Vilas centre. The State government is planning to submit proposals for construction of RUB and ROB to the Central government seeking funds for execution of the infrastructure development project. GMC Commissioner Ch Anuradha underlined the need to construct a new flyover to ease traffic congestion in the city in the wake of development of capital region Amaravati.
