22% men, 19% women in India diabetic, says NIN

HYDERABAD: In a nationwide study conducted by city-based National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), the prevalence of diabetes among men and women has been found to be 22 per cent and 19 per cent respectively and it is significantly associated with obesity, physical inactivity and hyperlipidaemia.
Also, prevalence of hypertension among urban men and women has been found to be 31 per cent and 26 per cent respectively.
The maximum prevalence is found in Kerala (31 to 39 pc) and the lowest in Bihar ( 16 to 22 pc) as per a report, ‘Diet and Nutritional Status of Urban Population and Prevalence of Obesity, Hypertension and Diabetes and its associated Non-Communicable Diseases’ released by the institution on its foundation day celebrations held here on Tuesday. A total 1.72 lakh subjects from 52,577 households in 16 states were covered.
