Two police stations in the suburbs will function from their own premises in the next few months. Pallikaranai and Chitlapakkam stations will get new buildings constructed by the Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation.
The State Home department accorded sanction for the building at Pallikaranai at a cost of ₹40.57 lakh in 2015. Tenders were called thrice to fix a contractor in 2016 and the work is now moving on at a good pace, according to a senior police officier.
“This is an issue people have been long seeking a solution for. The village panchayat passed a resolution in this regard in 2014,” said former Medavakkam panchayat president B. Ravi.
Similarly, administrative and financial sanction for the construction of a new multiplex police station building at Chitlapakkam has been given.
A government order said ₹143.58 lakh has been allotted to construct the station.
A soil test was conducted a few days ago after which technical sanction will be given in accordance with the budget. The Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation will also give a call for tenders for the construction.
TNPHC sources said the ground floor will host the law and order unit and the investigation of crimes will be handled on the first floor. They said the traffic department will function from the same building.
“It is good for the police officers as they will move from a dingy building on lake bed, where the municipal waste is dumped,” said P. Viswanathan, a resident of Chitlapakkam. He also said the present building should not be misused after evacuation.
