Prize winners in the Rotary Club, Tiruvallur district, chess tournament

CHENNAI: B Sai Sudharsan’s 5/17 helped City IV take a lead of 197 runs over City II in the drawn match of the TNCA round robin U-16 tournament held at Murugappa Grounds, on Tuesday. City IV won by virtue of first innings lead. Brief scores: City III 93 in 61.2 ovs and 63/2 in 36.5 ovs drew with City I 159/3 decl in 66 ovs (V Satheesh 51). City IV 311 in 85.2 ovs and 118/2 in 45.2 ovs (S Abinandhan 47, J Karthikeyan 55) drew with City II 124 in 49.5 ovs (Arjun P Murthy 42; R Aravindan 3/16, B Sai Sudharsan 5/17).

Gen-Next acadmey expands

India cricketer R Ashwin’s Gen- Next Cricket Academy has expanded its academy allowing youngsters to train at the select branches of Pon Vidyashram schools from September 30. The three programs of Gen-Next (weekend, Vision 20 and high-performance centre) will be available at the school. Valasaravakkam facility will be open from Saturday while the Injambakkam facility will open shortly. Coaching at Kolapakkam will commence by the end of this year. “Developing good infrastructure is a part of the Gen-Next dream. If every area has two or three good nets, it will bring down the travel time and also ensure that youngsters get to practice more regularly,” said Ashwin, mentor of the academy. Ram bags crown

Ram S Krishnan of BSNL won the 6th MS Venkataraman Memorial FIDE rated chess tournament on Tuesday held at NSN school, Chennai, organised by Mount Chess Academy. Ram was also awarded cash prize of `30,000. IM R Siddharth was runner- up, while Vinoth Kumar settled for third spot. Final placings: Ram S Krishnan 7.5 pts; R Siddharth 7; M Vinothkumar 7; Manu David Suthandram 6.5; Shyam Kumar 6.5; Anil Kumar 6.5; R Ashwath 6.5; Joy Lazer 6.5; Sibi Vishal 6.5; R Abinandhan 6.5.

Chess tournament

G Ulaganathan of Vaishnav College and P Chaithanya of SRM Jain Vidyalaya, Tiruvallur emerged as winners in the Rotary Club, Tiruvallur district level chess tournament. In the boys U-14 category, Tamizh Selvan Ganesan finished as topper while G Chandralekha won in the girls U-14 section.
