All fountains in Brindavan Gardens are set to go musical

The famed Brindavan Gardens, downstream the Krishnaraja Sagar reservoir, is set to get a makeover with the State government allocating ₹38 crore to replace all old fountains with new choreographed ones that will have music systems and ornamental lights.

Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Ltd. (CNNL) has prepared a detailed project report and the work is expected to start by October, a senior CNNL official said. CNNL had already, temporarily, installed lights at a cost of ₹84 lakh during the Dasara.

The ornamental garden, modelled on the design of the Shalimar Gardens of Kashmir in Mughal style, was manicured in 1937 by the late G.H. Krumbigal, the then Superintendent of Parks and Gardens of the Mysore Government, under the supervision of Sir Mirza Ismail, the then Dewan of the princely State of Mysore.

The garden is enriched with fountains of various kinds, running and cascading water-channels, lush green lawns, illuminated flower beds, shrubs, trees and sitting areas. “Pressure is mounting on the one musical fountain that is currently there as all visitors crowd there. So we have decided to convert all fountains across the gardens into musical ones,” he said.

The number of tourists to the gardens has increased by at least 30% since August last week. On an average, around 3,000 people visit every day.

CNNL, Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation, and the Department of Horticulture are the custodians of the gardens.
