Apple iPhone 8's glass back is 'not easy to repair' and replacement is expensive
The complications related to the glass back may end up impacting the market of the model

The glass back on Apple’s iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 plus are not only difficult to repair but are also costly, claim early reports. The troubles with the glass back of the models will likely put Apple’s claim of having ‘the most durable glass ever in a smartphone’ to the test.
The new glass back plates in the smartphones were aimed to aid wireless charging. However, the glass backs which have been reintroduced by Apple after a gap of over four years have emerged as a new problem that may even affect its sales.
According to a report by the repair site iFixit, beneath the glass there is a metal sheet. The metal sheet has a hole in the centre that enables wireless charging. As the metal sheet is fixed to the glass through a lot of glue, it will be very vulnerable to damage in case of a fall.
It will also be difficult for a third party to repair the glass panel as they may have to be careful with the components. The AppleCare+ provided by Apple for iPhone 8 is, on the other hand, not just expensive but also covers for only two such repairs during a two-year period. Further, the fact that excess amount will have to be paid for any glass repair makes it further undesirable.
This has put the users of the model in an awkward position. On one hand, leaving the glass back exposed makes it more prone to damage whose repairs may leave a hole in the pocket. On the other hand, protecting the glass back with a case could hinder wireless charging.
The iPhone 8 is already raising eyebrows due to its high cost. The complications related to the glass back may end up impacting the market of the model.
