A day after police registered an FIR against an assistant professor of Dyal Singh College — for allegedly posting “derogatory and objectionable” remarks against goddess Durga in a Facebook post — the college’s governing body (GB) suspended him on Monday. It also barred him from entering the premises. Following Kedal Kumar Mandal’s post on September 22, the National Democratic Teachers’ Front (NDTF) had lodged a police complaint. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) had also submitted a memorandum to the principal, demanding action against Mandal.

While Mandal had tendered an apology, college principal I S Bakshi said it would not be accepted. Mandal was asked to appear before the governing body at 4 pm on Monday and provide an explanation. As he failed to appear, the panel decided to suspend him. The suspension will be effective after the governing body recommendation gets a nod from the DU vice-chancellor Yogesh Tyagi, sources said.

A five-member enquiry committee — comprising the Chairperson, two GB members and the morning and evening college principals — has been set up to look into the matter. Depending on the committee’s recommendation, a decision will be taken on his suspension.
