Last week, we came across a report that Xiaomi has been spotted on the member list of Wireless Power Consortium tipping that the next-generation flagship - Mi 7 might arrive with wireless charging support.
The latest manufacturer to be added to be member list of this group of manufacturers supporting the Qi wireless charging standard seems to be Google. We say so as Google has joined the Wireless Power Consortium. Qi wireless charging is an open standard that is maintained by WPC and the companies in the member list.

Having said that Google has joined the Wireless Power Consortium, there are two indications for the same. Maybe Google is planning to implement the wireless charging feature in the upcoming Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones or the devices that they are planning to launch in the future.
We have already seen the leaked renders of the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones with a metal back. Notably, the Qi standard does not support wireless charging via metal, so there are chances for the second-generation Pixel smartphones to miss out on this feature. However, there are increased possibilities for Google to launch smartphones in the future with the wireless charging feature. It can even be a new Android Wear based smartwatch and not necessarily be a smartphone.

Recently, Apple announced the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X with the wireless charging support. Given that the new Apple smartphones support this feature, it is important for the high-end Android biggies to also offer support for wireless charging in order to rival the new iPhones. Already, many prominent Android smartphone makers such as Samsung, LG, Sony, etc. support this feature.
