Heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds lashed various districts in north and central Karnataka on Sunday and Monday, besides parts of the Malnad region.
Thimmanna, 55, was killed and three others seriously injured when lightning struck them near Basavapura village in Shivamogga taluk on Monday. Heavy rain pounded Shivamogga, Bhadravati and Shikaripur taluks, throwing life out of gear.
Inundated
In northern districts, rain was particularly intense in Davangere and Gadag districts. Low-lying areas in the districts were inundated and increased flow in the streams of Gadag district and Koppal districts. Overflowing drains and breached tanks resulted in inundation of low-lying areas in Nargund town, besides inundation of farm lands in and around Nargund, Mundargi and Laxmeshwar in Gadag districts.
Inundation of 60 houses at Budihal locality in Davangere resulted in flash protests by residents on official apathy. Over 80 families in Chikkanahalli and Nilammana Thota in the city were shifted to safer places and gruel centres opened.
In Davangere, public transport was affected as the main bus terminal was inundated. Uprooting of electricity poles resulted in power disruption in various localities. Nearly 1,000 houses were damaged, as per official sources. The heavy rain forced postponement of the physical fitness examination to posts of Police Sub-Inspector scheduled to take place at Davangere district stadium. Inspector General of Police A.M. Salim said the examination would be held on October 3.
Meanwhile cities, towns and villages in districts of Dharwad, Haveri, Gadag, Koppal, Chitradurga, Davangere, Uttar Kannada, and Belagavi received good rain on Monday. As per the forecast released by the Meteorological Department, heavy rain is likely to continue on September 27 and 28.
