Mumbai: Dindoshi police, probing the Rs 29 lakh burglary case registered in June, arrested prime accused Mohammad Gulamnabi Shaikh on last Monday from Sahebganj district of Jharkhand and brought to Mumbai on transit remand on September 19.
The police said four, including Sahebganj’s local jeweller, who purchased the stolen property are still at large. The gang of four members had drilled a hole in the wall of Satyam Jewellers shop, located at Kathiawadi Chowk on Rani Sati Marg in Malad (east), in June and decamped with jewellery worth Rs. 29 lakh.
According to the police, the burglars had hired a shop next to the jewellery shop to sell mangoes. The police studied the lease papers of the gang and found their mobile numbers. The mobile tower location and time of incident (from CCTV footage) matched with that of accused.
The zonal Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Vinay Kumar Rathod confirmed the development and said that four accused are still at large. “Based on the information and technical evidences, one team was sent to Jharkhand and Shaikh was arrested from Sahebganj,” said Rathod.
After burglary, the gang reached Jharkhand and sold the stolen jewellery to one local shop owner Sadhu, who is absconding after he learnt that a team of Mumbai police reached Sahebganj in connection with the burglary case. “One team had arrived (in Sahebganj) from Mumbai in connection with a case. We just escorted the visiting team,” P Murugan, Superintendent of Police, Sahebganj told the Free Press Journal on phone. Shaikh has committed similar offences in past too. Further investigations are underway.
