While scientists in the State have been involved in several projects with innovative research, the benefits should reach the public at large, said Minister for Higher Education K.P. Anbalagan.
He was speaking at the Tamil Nadu Scientist Awards ceremony at the Anna University, on Monday.
“The research work and innovations which scientists here come up with, should aid in the development of the state and the country. A special focus is needed on scientific research in agriculture,” he said.
To recognise scientists from various fields who have made outstanding contributions in their field of research and work, during the years 2012, 2013 and 2014, the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology gave away 29 awards. The awards were given to scientists who have made a mark in the fields of agriculture, biology, chemistry, environment, medicine, mathematics and social sciences among others.
Sunil Paliwal, Higher Education secretary and P. Duraisamy, Vice Chancellor of the University of Madras were among those who participated in the ceremony.
R. Palanisamy, Commissioner, Directorate of Technical Education said that he hoped that more scientists worked towards technology that will be most suited for the conditions in the country. “Most often, technology from developed countries is brought in to be adapted to the environment here. As a developing country, we should work towards more research and innovations on our home soil which the award winners today have excelled at, ” he said.
