Maha Shasthi marks the formal beginning of Durga Puja in Bengal, Assam, Odisha and Tripura and other eastern states. On this day, the four major rituals of the festival; Kalparamvo (the starting of the Pujas), Bodhan (consecration of the idol of goddess Durga), Amantran (inviting the goddess) and Adhibas (sanctifying the stay of the deity in the Puja area or pandals) are performed.

It is believed that on the day of Shasthi, Durga comes to the mortal world after completing her journey from Kailash. She does so to visit her father and comes along with her children – Ganesha, Kartika, Laxmi and Saraswati. Hence, it is a custom for ladies to participate in the setting up the Durga ghat before the idol arrives so as to welcome the daughter to her father’s home.

This festival is a major social and public event, especially in the northern and eastern part of India. It is celebrated with music, dance and abundance of food and is an occasion where people wholeheartedly indulge in the celebrations.
