More than 500 seats all over India remain vacant for higher studies in medical (DM) and surgery (MCh) courses even after the second round of counselling for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test-Super Speciality (NEET-SS). As of now, the Supreme Court has reserved its judgment on the case after hearing a plea for the third round of counselling to fill up all seats by 25 NEET-SS aspirants. Students, however, are hopeful that the apex court will order a third round of counselling soon. A medical student was quoted by HT as saying that a mop-up round will not do justice to all aspirants as it gives a chance to candidates with low NEET SS ranking to opt for high priority seats. “Super specialisation seats are precious, these should not go waste or go to candidates who can afford the exorbitant fees of private colleges. All candidates should be given a chance,” a medical student told Hindustan Times.
NEET-Super Speciality was held on June 10 and 11 and results for which were out on July 15. The first round of counselling for just 1,140 seats was conducted in the month of August earlier this year. Out of which about 828 seats were not offered as states such as Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and some institutes did not submit their (seat) vacancy lists. However, even though Andhra and Telangana submitted their lists, more than 500 seats remained vacant after the second round of counselling. The apex court ordered the second round and counselling was held from September 14 to 16.
