Banaras Hindu University Vice-Chancellor Girish Chandra Tripathi made a quiet visit to the national capital on Tuesday to attend a meeting of the university’s executive council here — the last meeting of the body during his term as V-C of the central university.

Prof. Tripathi’s term ends about two months from now and he ceases to exercise powers to take executive decisions like selection of new faculty members now.

“The meeting was fixed 20 days back and there were routine agenda points to be discussed,” Prof. Tripathi told The Hindu over phone.

“There was no discussion on the security plan – which has already been set in motion — as it did not figure on the agenda.”

Prof. Tripathi added that he had no meeting with officials of the Ministry of Human Resource Development in Delhi. Sources in MHRD confirmed what he said.

Interviews held

When BHU was tense on Sunday after police action on students and stone pelting by students the previous night, the administration conducted interviews for selection of teaching staff for various departments of the university.

The day after the police action — when hostels were being vacated — interviews for the Hindi department and some other departments were held at the Recruitment and Assessment Cell at Holkar House of BHU, sources said.

“The interviews should have been put off in view of the tension. But it seems they wanted these to happen before the V-C’s executive powers cease to operate,” said a professor of BHU, not wishing to be named.

On Monday too, interviews to the History department and some other departments were held, sources in BHU said.

“This round of interviews got over on Monday. Wherever required, selection committees were organised to take forward the recruitment process,” Prof. Tripathi confirmed to The Hindu.
