Plan to encourage community participation; to tackle solid waste management

The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs will soon launch a ‘Neighbourhood Action Plan’ for solid waste management, which will encourage community participation.

Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri on Sunday launched ‘My Home-My Neighbourhood’ (Ghar Bi Saaf-Pados Bhi Saaf) campaign at south Delhi’s Bhikaji Cama Place. The Minister kicked off the ‘Swachhta Hi Sewa’ campaign by sweeping the area.

He addressed the people, sanitation workers, and Ministry and South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) officials, who undertook a pledge.

Modern litter pickers

Mr. Puri inaugurated modern litter pickers imported by the SDMC.

He said a comprehensive neighbourhood action plan leads to substantial reduction in the quantum of solid waste sent to landfill, besides enabling better performance of waste-to-compost and waste-to-energy plants.

The plan follows six components, which include segregation of waste at source followed by compost-making from wet waste within the premises and recycling dry waste.

It also includes freeing the neighbourhood of open defecation and open urination, and motivating residents in the neighbourhood against dumping garbage in open spaces. The plan also encouraged the residents to adopt a nearby park or an open place which can be a common spot for collection and waste segregation.

The Minister said the plan will be launched in all cities and towns across the country on the occasion of the third anniversary of Swachh Bharat Mission on October 2.

He appealed to Delhi residents to take a lead in the initiative.
