KOZHIKODE: Three persons from Peruvannamoozhi were remanded in judicial custody by the Perambra Judicial First Class Magistrate Court on Saturday on the charge of hunting wild boars.
Chemban Jose, 56, Veerappan Mani, 65, and K. Babu were arrested by a forest squad led by range officer B.R. Robin.
Officials said Jose, the first accused in the case, was a frequent offender and had been involved in two similar cases previously reported from the region. Cases had been registered against him for selling boar meat and possessing an unlicensed gun, they added.
In the latest incident, the three were spotted killing wild boars using crackers. They were planning to sell the meat to local buyers. Forest Department officials said the gang included a tribesman. They were booked under Section 9 (Prohibition of hunting) of the Wild Life (Protection) Act.
The incident that led to the arrest of the three took place last Friday. Information about the gang was passed on to the forest squad by local residents.
