Elliott not the only new name to step up Sunday

Joe Walker wouldn’t have been on the field to leap over the pile and make a spectacular fourth-and-goal stop at the end of the first half Sunday if not for an ankle injury to Eagles teammate Jordan Hicks. Corey Clement, who ran for a 15-yard touchdown, was filling in for veteran Darren Sproles, forced out with a wrist issue.

Jack McCaffery: In victory over Giants, Pederson’s best coaching came at the end

The one absolute about the most important play in a victory that could define the Eagles’ season Sunday was that none of the credit was likely to slide toward Doug Pederson. That’s because long before the Eagles would complete a 27-24 victory over the New York Giants, he’d already been widely characterized as foolish. Even in an organization that Jeffrey Lurie consistently hums will never be risk-adverse, Pederson is an over-willing, play-calling gambler. Leonard Tose, reputed to have had a habit of splitting queens at Atlantic City blackjack tables, will always be the franchise standard. But in less than two full seasons as the head coach, Pederson has so wildly ignored conventional football thought that he already has hustled up for the place money.

Trump revels in latest war of words with professional sports

With his attacks on activist athletes, President Donald Trump plunged into the middle of his favorite kind of drama — personal, aggressive, culturally volatile and entirely of his own making. For three days, the provocateur president has drawn criticism from the worlds of politics and sports for saying that football players who kneel during the national anthem should be fired. The conflict peaked Sunday with Trump’s remarks, which had the effect of uniting a newly minted opposition coalition that included a growing number of players and coaches, as well as some owners who have backed the president.

Alleged heroin dealer Kenneth Roberts told police that he wasn’t just selling drugs but that he “helps out people, too” by taking them to clinics and rehabilitation facilities, according to police. Roberts was one of three alleged dealers arrested last week following separate undercover investigations in the borough. Police also confiscated a total of 432 packets of heroin, a firearm, more than $1,800 cash and three vehicles, Sgt. Christopher Eiserman said.

Chesco Commissioners endorse CWA’s decision not to sell

The Chester County Commissioners have endorsed the decision made earlier this year by the Chester Water Authority not to sell its system, which covers southern Chester County, to a private water provider. At their work session meeting last week, Commissioners’ Chairwoman Michelle Kichline read a two-page statement outlining the three-member board’s support for the vote by the authority’s board not to accept a $250 million offer to purchase the system from Aqua America.

ENTERTAINMENT

‘Rock ‘n Roll Man: The Alan Freed Story’ is rockin’ the house at Bucks County Playhouse

Like others, I go to be entertained. But every so often, a show that is filled with good music and a good story, gives me more — it gives me an understanding of a person or a time in the world that I knew little about. “Rock ‘n Roll Man: The Alan Freed Story,” making it’s world debut at Bucks County Playhouse in New Hope, has it all. Full of life, featuring an incredibly talented ensemble, it is fascinatingly informative, and it is a winner. If I assigned stars to a production, out of five, I’d give it a six!

Television: New broadcast season offerings show some allure

During my childhood, the biggest day of the year was not Christmas or the first day of school. It was when NBC, CBS, and ABC began their fall line-ups. I would make prepare for weeks by gathering schedules and decided what I, and my family since I controlled the TV, were going to watch. It was a time before DVRs, On Demand, Hulu, Netflix, weeklong repeat performances. If you missed a show, you missed it. No going back. It was also a time before choices numbered in the hundreds or even thousands.
