Technology giant Google has admitted that it was giving advertisements on YouTube Red, which was promised to be an ad-free service. The company has blamed technical faults for such ads on YouTube's premium service.
YouTube Red was started by Google as a paid streaming subscription service similar to Netflix. Launched in 2014 the service is available only in the US, Australia, Mexico, New Zealand and South Korea.
However, the problem came into limelight, according to TNW, after a number of Red subscribers took to the Reddit website to raise their concerns. They complained that advertisements indeed existed in YouTube Red.
One user even shared the response from YouTube that stated that printed ads were allowed on YouTube Red. “…With YouTube Red, you shouldn’t be seeing iBanner ad, image ad, pre-roll ad, ad that shows before their video starts… you may still see branding or promotions embedded in creators’ content that isn’t controlled by YouTube,” said the YouTube representative.
But after the news started to spread around, Google came up with a clarification. It responded that there was indeed a miscommunication from the part of the company when it came to the issue and confirmed that indeed no ads should come in the YouTube Red.
In an e-mail to the Reddit user who had earlier complained, a supervisor with the YouTube made a clarification about the misinformation. “ …It has come to my attention that a member of our team provided you with some incorrect information about the YouTube Red ad-free feature that I’d like to correct. YouTube Red members should not see any ads and the screenshot you provided shows an ad that absolutely should be blocked with the service. I sincerely apologise for the previous miscommunication,” the email read.
The supervisor also assured that the problem was identified and will be rectified soon.
