Mumbai: Soon, Mumbaikars can expect private vans to collect dry waste from their doorstep. According to a report in Hindustan Times, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to award waste collection, processing and recycling contracts to private players.
The project will be initiated as pilot project first in the K-West, K-East, H-West and H-East wards. Based on how successful it is, it will be implemented throughout the city.
The BMC had planned to introduce the segregation of wet waste and dry waste at the household level. But, last week the BMC decided to relax the deadline of October 2 after which they were going to stop collecting wet waste from societies which generate more than 100 kg of waste a day.
However, according to the report in Hindustan Times, to keep to the deadline mandated by the Bombay High Court, the civic body will have to stop dumping wet and dry waste at the Mulund and Deonar dumping ground by September 30 and come up with a holistic plan to manage waste better.
