MCD data shows 22% rise in dengue as compared to 2016

The national capital has seen a 22 per cent rise in dengue cases as compared to last year, the latest MCD data reveals. The data states that over 3,000 people have tested positive for the vector-borne infection so far this season. At least 52 per cent of the patients, however, have acquired the infection from outside the city, the data reveals.

According to the latest data by the MCD, 288 fresh cases of dengue were reported last week, till September 23. The data adds that fresh cases of people acquiring the infection from other states, and seeking treatment in Delhi, were also reported in the same period. Of the 3,109 dengue cases, 1,465 affected people were residents of Delhi, while the rest were from other states. Of the 1,465 cases of Delhi residents, 761 were reported this month. Dengue has, so far, claimed the life of one person in the city this season.

Meanwhile, only 32 fresh cases of chikungunya were reported in the capital last week. This season, 533 (from Delhi and outside the state) cases of chikungunya have been reported till September 23. This is an 86 per cent drop in the case of the vectorborne infection as compared to last year.

In case of both dengue and chikungunya, areas under the densely- populated South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) have reported the maximum number of cases this year. At least 348 cases of dengue and 44 cases of chikungunya have been reported in SDMC areas this season till September 23. Malaria, too, has shown a spike in the number of cases — a 36 per cent increase as compared to last year.

Last week, 85 fresh cases of malaria were reported in the capital. However, 32 of the total number of cases were from Uttar Pradesh. During the season, the capital has reported 954 cases of malaria, of which 43 per cent of the patients were from neighbouring states such as Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
