PM Narendra Modi on Monday launched the Saubhagya Yojana and inaugurated Deendayal Urja Bhawan aimed at ensuring access to electricity to every household. As per a Tweet shared by PM Modi, the new scheme aims to provide access to electricity for all households, ensure kerosene substitution, improve education, health and communication services, increase job opportunities, and provide better quality of life particularly to women in all chores. Speaking on the launch, PM said that more than 4 crore households don’t have electricity even after 70 years independence. Modi said, “Can you imagine that more than 4 crore families out of 25 crore don’t have electricity.” He added that children in these families have to study with the help of diyas made of mud. Modi explained that Saubhagya translates to Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana. He promised that no poor will have to pay a single penny for electricity connection.
