BENGALURU: A 17-year-old NCC cadet of Bengaluru’s National College drowned in a pond even as fellow students were taking selfies oblivious to his distress. The incident took place at Ramagondlu on the Kanakapura road on Sunday evening.

The cadet has been identified as Vishwas G, a first-year PUC student of National College, Jayanagar in Bengaluru.

His parents have blamed the college authorities for their son’s death. They said the NCC coordinator did not pay attention to students’ safety during the trip. There was tension at the college on Monday afternoon when the parents staged a protest.

According to the police, a group of 25 NCC cadets had gone on a camp and got down into a pond which is ten feet deep. Vishwas ventured into the middle of the pond while his classmates stayed on the edge, taking selfies. It was only after a while that they realised that Vishwas was missing. They realised that he had drowned when the body floated to the top. The NCC coordinator of the college is at large since the incident.

The Kaggalipura police have recorded the parents’ statement and started an investigation.
