TIRUNELVELI
In a daring daylight robbery, three youths took away 100 sovereigns of gold ornaments and two cars from the house of a timber trader in Palayamkottai after threatening the inmates at knifepoint on Monday.
Police said the robbers, who came to the house of timber trader J. Benjamin (62) at Shakthi Nagar on Seevalaperi Road around 1.30 p.m., enquired about the whereabouts of Mr. Benjamin. Even as his wife Alex and daughter-in-law Suji Mary were speaking to them, the robbers forcibly entered the house.
After tying up the women at knifepoint, the robbers stole 100 sovereigns of gold ornaments and escaped with the booty in two cars owned by Mr. Benjamin.
While one of the three robbers in a stolen car was intercepted by the police near Kayathar on Tirunelveli – Kovilpatti stretch, the others escaped. The robber, who was identified later as Iman of Ramaiyanpatti near Thatchanallur, was taken to an undisclosed destination for questioning.
“We’ve extracted vital clues from Iman about his associates, who will be nabbed shortly,” a police officer said.
