3 died at Kollam ESI hospital recently

Three patients admitted to the Heart Centre (cardiology unit) attached to the ESI Superspecialty Hospital at Asramam in the city died last week after undergoing angioplasty. Hospital superintendent Karan Singh Solanki confirmed the deaths. Six patients had undergone angioplasty there last week.

District Medical Officer (DMO) V.V. Shirley, on Monday, ordered a probe into one of the deaths on a basis of a complaint from the wife of a victim, Sadasivan, 47. The complainant had alleged medical negligence as the cause of death. Dr. Shirley said there were no complaints on the other deaths, but the probe would look into them also.

Separately, Dr. Solanki has ordered a probe into all the three deaths, two of which took place last Tuesday. The probe would be completed in a week.

The Heart Centre of the ESI Superspecialty Hospital is given on contract to a private hospital here. All services at the Heart Centre are done by specialists from the private hospital. It is not known whether the three who died were elective or non-elective patients. Sadasivan’s wife says that he had gone to the hospital riding a motorcycle after he felt a cramp in his left hand.
